FIDIC: International Standard Building Contracts
The FIDIC, Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs Conseils (French) or International Federation of Consulting Engineers (English) is the most important international umbrella organization of national associations of consulting engineers in the construction industry. It was founded in 1913 and has members from over 60 nations. As part of its activities, it developed the FIDIC construction contracts as standardized model contracts for international construction projects.
They are therefore particularly suitable for major construction projects with international participants. FIDIC contracts are often prescribed or recommended when awarding contracts financed by the World Bank, other multilateral development banks and the EU (approx. USD 25 to 40 billion per year). They are also frequently used for privately financed investments, particularly in Eastern Europe.
FIDIC published the first contract under the title “The Form of contract for works of Civil Engineering construction” in 1957, which was given the name “The Red Book” to match its cover.
In the years that followed, FIDIC improved the model and developed further model contracts:
- Conditions of Contract for Plant and Design-Build for Electrical and Mechanical Plant and for Building and Engineering Works Designed by the Contractor, „Yellow Book” Conditions of Contract for EPC/Turnkey Projects, „Silver Book”
- Short Form of Contract, „Green Book”
